Arsenal Pursue Bruno Guimarães in Summer Transfer Plan
Arsenal’s summer rebuild is beginning to take a clear shape – and at the heart of it sits Bruno Guimarães.
Reports in France this week claimed Arsenal had reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle United for the Brazilian midfielder. The Athletic has now stepped into the conversation, stopping short of confirming a full agreement, but backing up the central point: Arsenal are moving seriously, and moving fast, to bring Guimarães to north London.
This is not a speculative enquiry. It is a live pursuit.
A midfield cornerstone in a three-piece puzzle
Arsenal’s work in the market has already started. Illan Meslier has arrived from Leeds United to bolster the goalkeeping department, while Christos Tzolis has come in from Club Brugge to add depth and unpredictability out wide. Piero Hincapié’s loan has been turned into a permanent deal, securing a left-sided defender Mikel Arteta clearly trusts.
Those moves are the foundation. The real headline business is still to come.
According to The Athletic, Arsenal want three more signings before the window closes:
- a central midfielder – with Guimarães the leading candidate;
- a winger – with Vinicius Junior the dream target;
- a centre-back – vital cover while William Saliba recovers from injury.
The midfield piece looks the most advanced. Arsenal have tracked Guimarães for years, and with the squad crying out for another high-level operator in the centre of the pitch, the timing is finally aligning. While Newcastle sources continue to deny that a deal is done, the noise around the transfer has grown too loud to ignore.
Newcastle denial, growing inevitability
Publicly, Newcastle have pushed back. Briefings from within the club maintain that Guimarães is not on the verge of departure. Yet even those close to the situation on Tyneside have accepted one uncomfortable truth: Eddie Howe’s recent exit came against the backdrop of an expectation that Guimarães would be sold.
That says everything about the financial and strategic pressure Newcastle are under – and about how valuable the Brazilian is in the current market.
Arsenal sense an opening. With Guimarães due to report back for pre-season with Newcastle this weekend, the London club are keen to accelerate talks and avoid a drawn-out saga that drags into the heart of their own preparations.

Vinicius on hold, defence in limbo
While Guimarães is the most realistic near-term arrival, the other two parts of Arsenal’s plan are more complicated.
Out wide, Arsenal are “hotly pursuing” Vinicius Junior, but they stand in line behind Real Madrid’s contract negotiations. Until the European champions resolve the Brazilian’s future, Arsenal can only wait, watch, and hope that an unlikely door opens. For now, it remains an ambition rather than an active negotiation at the same level as Guimarães.
At centre-back, the picture is even murkier. Arsenal need cover for Saliba, whose absence leaves a hole in the heart of Arteta’s defence, but there is no clear frontrunner. Names have circulated – Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Jacobo Ramon among them – yet, according to current reporting, those options are off the table.
Talk earlier in the week hinted that Arsenal were closing in on a defensive signing. That momentum has stalled. Unless something breaks unexpectedly, the backline addition looks the furthest away.
The deal that can actually happen
Strip away the noise and one truth stands out: of the three remaining signings Arsenal want, Guimarães is the most “doable” right now.
The player fits the profile. The need in midfield is obvious. Newcastle’s situation creates a narrow but real window. Arsenal, still stung by how close they have come in recent title races, know they cannot waste it.
It is not done yet. There is no official agreement, no shirt held aloft, no announcement video queued up. But as Guimarães prepares to rejoin Newcastle’s pre-season camp, the clock is ticking.
