Middlesbrough are closing on a deal for Columbus Crew standout Arfsten, with the versatile defender-winger expected to travel to England in the coming days to finalise his move.

Boro will pay a fee that could rise to $7.5 million, with add-ons and bonuses built into the agreement, according to sources. Columbus have protected their long-term interests too, inserting a sell-on clause into the deal for one of MLS’s premier wingbacks.
This is not a move born overnight. Boro tracked the 25-year-old aggressively last summer and kept their place in the queue while his reputation grew in MLS and with the USMNT. French side Toulouse also came forward with a bid to sign him in 2025, but Boro have pushed the hardest to get this one over the line. News of the transfer first emerged via The Athletic.
If the final details fall into place, Arfsten will become the third USMNT player in Michael Carrick’s squad – and the third with roots in Columbus.
