Amara Nallo's Fresh Start at HJK Helsinki After Liverpool Setbacks
Liverpool defender Amara Nallo has been handed a fresh stage – and a fresh start – in Finland, after agreeing a loan move to HJK Helsinki for the rest of the year.
The 19-year-old centre-back will slot straight into the sharp end of the Veikkausliiga season, available for the final six rounds of the regular campaign and the subsequent championship split, with the 12-team league dividing into two sections for the run-in. HJK are deep in the fight for domestic honours. Nallo arrives with his own battle in mind.
He may not have many senior minutes, but his story at Liverpool has been anything but quiet.
Signed from West Ham United in 2023, Nallo settled into the club’s under-21 set-up, learning his trade away from the spotlight across his first 18 months. Then came Eindhoven. Then came history – the kind no young defender wants.
Handed his senior debut in a Champions League dead rubber at PSV Eindhoven in January 2025, Nallo’s big night unravelled almost instantly. Introduced from the bench late on, he was sent off just four minutes later, becoming the youngest player ever dismissed in Liverpool’s history. One appearance, one red card, and a harsh lesson at the highest level.
His second outing did little to change the narrative. Brought on again as a substitute in the League Cup defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield last October, he lasted only 12 minutes before another red card cut his evening short. Two games, two dismissals. A defender desperate to make an impression, instead reduced to a cautionary tale.
The third time, at least, passed without drama. Introduced for the final 16 minutes of a Champions League clash at home to Qarabag in January, Nallo finally navigated a senior appearance without incident, a small but important step in rebuilding trust and rhythm. Around those came nine further inclusions in the matchday squad, most recently in April for the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, but no further minutes.
Now comes Helsinki, and with it, a different kind of pressure.
The Finnish season runs from April to late October, and HJK will not be easing him in. Nallo has already been registered for European duty and named in the squad for Thursday night’s Europa Conference League second qualifying round first leg against Northern Irish side Coleraine. From the moment he pulls on that shirt, every touch will be another chance to redefine his reputation.
For Liverpool, the loan offers something they cannot replicate in academy fixtures: real jeopardy, real stakes, real consequence. For HJK, it brings in a left-footed teenager schooled in Premier League surroundings, hungry to show that those early red cards were a brutal anomaly, not a blueprint.
For Nallo, it is simpler still. A season’s end in Finland, a career that still feels like it is only just beginning, and the opportunity to turn a chaotic introduction into a platform. The next challenge starts far from Anfield – but what happens in Helsinki will go a long way to deciding whether he truly has a future there.
