Alejandro Garnacho Faces Tough Times at Aston Villa but Could Find Escape in January
The start of Alejandro Garnacho's time at Aston Villa has been disappointing. The Argentine winger joined the club on loan from Chelsea during the summer, with a clause requiring Villa to buy him for £43 million if certain conditions are met. Those conditions are described as "easily achievable," yet Garnacho has barely featured.
He has appeared only three times in the league, totaling just 31 minutes on the pitch. In recent weeks, he has not even made it off the bench across all competitions. His situation recalls that of Harvey Elliott, who signed a similar deal with Villa in 2025 but played just nine matches all season because manager Unai Emery was reluctant to activate the permanent transfer.
Unai Emery Addresses Garnacho's Position
Emery has not been as candid about Garnacho’s future as he was about Elliott, but his comments hint that the winger is far down the pecking order. When asked what Garnacho needs to do to break back into the squad, Emery said,
“Continue working. Work, work, train, work. When he can have minutes to play, try and play well. He is progressing, but we have players in front of him now.”
Emery pointed out that players like George Hemmings, Alysson, and Ibrahim Mbaye currently hold the spots ahead of Garnacho.
“George is playing fantastic. Alysson is also understanding things well and is giving us things I want. Mbaye also responded well. We want a competitive team and players to compete in the style we have. Garnacho is a little bit behind because of some circumstances we had in pre-season. It is time to be patient for the time he needs.”
Possible January Move Could Revive Garnacho's Career
If Garnacho’s limited role continues, there may be an opportunity for a fresh start in January. According to reports from the Daily Mail, several La Liga clubs are keeping tabs on the 22-year-old winger. This could offer him a route out of Villa Park and a chance to gain more regular playing time.
Such a move would bring Garnacho closer to home. Born in Madrid, he spent part of his youth career at Atlético Madrid’s academy before moving to Manchester United at age 16 in 2020. A return to Spain might provide the environment he needs to regain form and confidence.
During the international break, while many players represent their countries, Garnacho remains with Villa as they hold a training camp in Seville. His last appearance for Argentina came in 2024, so this period could be crucial for making an impression on Emery before Premier League action resumes on October 10.
