Alejandro Balde's Uncertain Future at Barcelona
Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future has been thrown into late-window uncertainty, with Manchester United circling and Hansi Flick refusing to offer any guarantees.
The young left-back is understood to be happy at Barça, but his situation has shifted. A meeting with his agent this week underlined that the door is not closed on a move, especially with João Cancelo now back at the club on a permanent deal and competition on the flanks intensifying.
Balde is weighing a simple but brutal question: does he still see himself as a central piece in this project, or as the man waiting his turn?
Flick, speaking in Saturday’s press conference, did nothing to soften that dilemma. Asked directly about Balde, the coach chose clarity over comfort.
"It's a difficult question because he's a player of immense quality, and it's important to know if he's confident he can compete in his position. That's what I want to see from all my players. Every day I observe what they do, their level, whether they demonstrate that they're at the level to play. Ultimately, we have to play as a team; only then will we achieve success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent."
He could have offered the usual public backing. A simple “I love Balde and I want him to stay” would have ended the debate for now. Instead, Flick pushed it back onto the player: stay and fight, or step aside.
The message is unmistakable. At this Barça, nobody is protected by reputation or potential. Flick wants relentless competition in every role, and he has little time for passengers. If a player is content to be a backup, the coach would rather free the space than carry the compromise.
For Balde, and for Manchester United watching closely, the next move now feels as much about mentality as it is about minutes.
