Abdukodir Khusanov Signs New Five-Year Deal with Manchester City

Manchester City have moved decisively to lock down one of their emerging pillars in defence, with Abdukodir Khusanov signing a new five-year contract on Saturday.

At 22, the Uzbekistan international has already forced his way into the heart of a squad built to compete for every major trophy. He arrived from Lens in January 2025 as a promising centre-back; he ends 2026 as a double domestic cup winner and a central figure in City’s next cycle.

Last season, Khusanov played his part in City’s FA Cup and League Cup triumphs and in a Premier League campaign that ended with the club finishing second. In a team stacked with established stars, he did not just blend in. He grew.

“This is a great day for me and my family. I am really happy to extend my stay at City,” he said, reflecting on a whirlwind 18 months in Manchester. “I’ve enjoyed every minute since I arrived in Manchester and I feel I am growing and learning a lot as a player.

“I have a new challenge now, which is to impress (new manager) Enzo Maresca and his staff and ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that.”

That last line matters. A new manager, a fresh tactical blueprint, and a young defender determined not to slip down the pecking order. The battle for places under Maresca will be ruthless. Khusanov clearly intends to be in the thick of it.

His club form has run alongside a rapid rise on the international stage. Already capped 30 times by Uzbekistan, he featured at the World Cup, starting all three of their Group K matches. Those minutes on the biggest stage have hardened him, sharpened his timing and decision-making, and only added to City’s belief that they have a long-term cornerstone on their hands.

Inside the club, the verdict on his trajectory is emphatic.

City’s director of football Hugo Viana did not hide his enthusiasm.

“We’ve been really pleased and impressed by Abdukodir’s development since he arrived in England,” Viana said. “We’re seeing him grow into a brilliant young man and an outstanding defender – but we know this is only the beginning. His physical and technical abilities are top, he has all the assets needed to be a world-class centre-back.

“At just 22, his best years are all in front of him and his potential to get even better is clear for all to see.”

The timing of the extension is no coincidence. Earlier in the week, England forward Phil Foden put pen to paper on a new four-year deal. Two signatures, two different ends of the pitch, one clear message: City are building their next era around a core they trust.

Khusanov’s blend of power, composure and modern distribution fits the profile of a Maresca defender. He is comfortable stepping into midfield, aggressive in duels, and brave enough to hold a high line. Those traits will be tested even more as City evolve under their new coach.

For now, the picture is simple. A 22-year-old centre-back from Uzbekistan, once a quiet arrival from Lens, has earned the club’s faith and a contract that carries him deep into his prime.

The next question is not whether he belongs at this level. It is how far he can push himself in a City side that expects – and demands – greatness.
