Rory Finneran Earns First Call-Up to Republic of Ireland Squad
Rory Finneran’s rise gathered serious pace this week, as the Newcastle United teenager earned his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad for their friendly against Grenada.
The 18-year-old has linked up with Heimir Hallgrimsson’s group at their training camp in Murcia, Spain, ahead of Saturday’s game at the Estadio Nueva Condomina (17:00 BST) – a landmark moment in a year that has already transformed his career.
From Blackburn prospect to senior international
Finneran only joined Newcastle from Blackburn Rovers in 2024, moving into one of the Premier League’s most ambitious projects. His progress through Ireland’s youth ranks – featuring at under-17 and under-19 level – had already marked him out as one to watch. Now he steps into the senior environment earlier than many expected.
His promotion comes in the middle of a reshuffle. Cardiff City defender Joel Bagan and Ipswich Town winger Kasey McAteer have both withdrawn through injury, opening space in Hallgrimsson’s squad. Ireland have turned to youth, and Finneran gets his chance.
Umeh pulled back as club stakes take priority
The camp was also supposed to be a breakthrough moment for another youngster. Benfica attacker Jaden Umeh had received his first senior call-up, only for the Portuguese club to pull him out.
This friendly sits outside Fifa’s official international window, which means clubs are under no obligation to release their players. Benfica have exercised that right.
Their under-19s face a must-win clash with Famalicao on Saturday as they chase qualification for the Uefa Youth League. Umeh, who struck twice in a 6-2 win over UD Leiria on Sunday, is central to that push, and the club wants him available.
“Benfica are still fighting in their U19s to be in the Uefa Youth League,” said Hallgrimsson. “The plan was for them to have secured that by now, but unfortunately, results this weekend didn't go their way, so Jaden still has one more game to play.
“We knew beforehand that this was a possibility, even if it was unlikely. It is unlucky for him that the results went that way, as we were looking forward to working with him, but we understand the club's position and will have to wait for a future window to bring him into the environment.”
So one door closes, at least for now, for Umeh. Another swings wide open for Finneran.
A first senior camp. A chance to impress a new international manager. And for Ireland, a glimpse of the next generation arriving a little ahead of schedule.
