Roberto Martinez Addresses Euro 2024 Discipline Rumors

Roberto Martinez has drawn a firm line under the whispers.

Reflecting on the fallout from Euro 2024, the Portugal head coach forcefully rejected suggestions that lingering disciplinary problems played any part in his latest decisions. Speaking to Portuguese newspaper Record, the Spanish tactician tackled the rumours head‑on, making it clear he will not allow an old story to be rewritten as scandal.

"When there's a tournament and information leaks out, it's a very serious situation. At that time, we investigated and it was an accident. It wasn't a lack of discipline," Martinez said, revisiting the episode that had been dragged back into the spotlight after the campaign in Germany.

The incident in question dates back two years, to Euro 2024, and has since been used as a convenient hook for speculation around Antonio’s status in the squad. Martinez, though, would not indulge the narrative. For him, the matter was dealt with, the conclusions reached, and the label of “indiscipline” firmly rejected.

"It happened at Euro 2024 and that's not part of the decision now. Two years have passed," he stressed. "It happens in group dynamics and it's important to remember the most important thing: it was an accident and not an act of indiscipline. Antonio learned from it, but that's not part of the decision now."

The message was unmistakable. Whatever choices Martinez is making today are rooted in football, not in an old dressing‑room incident that, in his eyes, never crossed the line into misconduct.
