Key Signing Each Premier League Club Must Make Before Transfer Deadline
The transfer window has less than a month left, and all 20 Premier League clubs still need to strengthen their squads. The recent World Cup break hasn’t stopped teams from rushing to finalize deals before the season starts on August 21, with the window closing on September 1.
There are numerous ins and outs expected as clubs seek to fix weak spots or cover departures. Here’s the key position each Premier League club should target before the window shuts.
Arsenal — Central Midfielder
While Arsenal have been linked with winger Vinícius Júnior, their midfield needs more urgent reinforcement. Last season’s heavy reliance on Declan Rice drained his energy, visible even during the World Cup. Martín Zubimendi struggled in the latter half of last season, and young Myles Lewis-Skelly is yet to prove himself fully. Mikel Merino seems better suited as an impact substitute.
Martin Ødegaard, Eberechi Eze, and Kai Havertz provide attacking options, but the team lacks a solid box-to-box midfielder to share the load with Rice. Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães is the top target who could improve this title-challenging squad.
Aston Villa — Left Back
With Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers gone, and Lucas Digne likely returning to Paris Saint-Germain, Aston Villa face a shortage at left back. Currently, Ian Maatsen is the only player in that position. While talented, Villa need another reliable option as they return to the Champions League under Unai Emery.
Bournemouth — Winger
Bournemouth’s wide forward options lack depth beyond Rayan, who is attracting interest from top European clubs and Saudi Arabia. Young players like Ben Gannon-Doak, David Brooks, and Amine Adli haven’t impressed enough. Though right back is another concern, Bournemouth look set to sign Juanlu Sánchez there. Adding quality wingers is vital, especially after losing Antoine Semenyo and facing Europa League commitments.
Brentford — Left Back
Brentford have made several signings but still need to improve at left back. Rico Henry’s history of injuries makes him unreliable, and Keane Lewis-Potter is not a natural fit for the role. Finding a more traditional and dependable left back is necessary.
Brighton & Hove Albion — Striker
Brighton must replace Danny Welbeck, who moved to Chelsea after scoring 13 Premier League goals last season. Their current options are young and unproven, which is risky given their new Conference League participation. Bringing in a clinical striker is a priority.
Chelsea — Goalkeeper
Despite some activity under Xabi Alonso, Chelsea haven’t reinforced their goalkeeper position. Robert Sánchez improved last season but isn’t considered strong enough for the club’s ambitions. While rumors about new goalkeepers have been quiet, Chelsea really need a top-class keeper for progress.
Coventry City — Left Back
Coventry is close to permanently signing goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and will soon focus on left back. Frank Lampard seeks a proven Premier League defender to handle tough opposing wingers. A striker addition is also desired.
Crystal Palace — Centre Back
Palace are dangerously thin at centre back after losing Marc Guéhi and Maxence Lacroix. Remaining options include Chris Richards, Chadi Riad, and Jaydee Canvot. They aimed to sign Chrislain Matsima, but the deal collapsed. They need one or two defenders urgently to stabilize the backline.
Everton — Defensive Midfielder
After Idrissa Gana Gueye left for free, Everton signed Hayden Hackney but still lack a true defensive enforcer. Although a striker might be needed later, prioritizing a solid defensive midfielder to protect the back four aligns with David Moyes’ tactical approach.
Fulham — Winger
Following the departures of Harry Wilson and Samuel Chukwueze, Fulham are short on wingers. Oscar Bobb and Kevin offer limited threat on the flanks. The club must add pace and creativity on the wings to avoid trouble this season.
Hull City — Winger
Hull have brought in four new players already and expect up to eight more signings. Improving the winger position is key since the Tigers currently lack star attacking options. Leon Bailey from Aston Villa is a likely arrival, but more reinforcements may be needed to maintain Premier League status.
Ipswich Town — Central Midfielder
Ipswich, another promoted side, has recruited eight new players but still requires central midfield reinforcement. A deal for Florentino Luís from Burnley is near completion, yet fitness concerns mean Gary O’Neil may seek further additions.
Leeds United — Striker
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was crucial in Leeds’ late surge last season but has frequent injuries. Alternatives like Lukas Nmecha and Joël Piroe are unproven over long stretches. Leeds need a clinical striker to share goal-scoring duties.
Liverpool — Winger
Despite big spending last summer, Liverpool still need a winger, especially after Mohamed Salah’s exit. Víctor Muñoz covers the left side, but the right wing remains a problem. PSG’s Bradley Barcola is a leading but costly target.
Manchester City — Right Back
City have added Elliot Anderson but lost key players like Akanji, Stones, Aké, and Silva. Right back is a weak spot; Matheus Nunes has been tried there, and Rico Lewis has played sporadically. Interest in Tino Livramento and Malo Gusto suggests City want a fresh right back option.
Manchester United — Central Midfielder
United have signed two midfielders but still need a third to replace Casemiro’s unique qualities. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos bring different skills, but a real midfield destroyer would balance the team. Carlos Baleba and Manu Koné are top names linked.
Newcastle United — Left Back
Newcastle have had a rough summer with management changes and player exits. Should Hall leave for Manchester United, the left back spot becomes even more urgent. A versatile fullback who can also cover right back would help cover gaps caused by departures.
Nottingham Forest — Central Midfielder
Replacing Elliot Anderson, who joined Man City, is crucial. Forest probably won’t find an equal replacement but must try. Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall is favored, though expensive. Looking abroad might be cheaper but riskier.
Sunderland — Left Back
Sunderland have signed Thomas Meunier for the right side but need an upgrade at left back. Veteran players Reinildo and Arthur Masuaku are not inspiring. With possible European competition, strengthening the squad further, including wingers, is needed.
Tottenham Hotspur — Winger
Spurs responded quickly to last season’s struggles with several signings, including Tonali and others. Yet, the winger spot remains weak due to injuries to Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert. Options are limited and uncertain, making a new explosive winger a smart move.
