Manchester United Targets João Fernandes for Midfield Rebuild
Manchester United’s summer is starting in the middle of the pitch.
With West Ham dropping out of the Premier League, United are preparing to make their move for 21-year-old João Fernandes, sounding out the terms of a deal and testing just how aggressive the London club will be in negotiations.
United’s recruitment team want three midfielders through the door in this window. Fernandes has pushed his way towards the top end of that list. The club believe he will be available and have placed his value at around £50 million, a figure they regard as fair in the current market and one they hope can get a deal done without a prolonged saga.
West Ham, though, sense an opportunity. Those close to the club expect them to invite as many bidders as possible, aiming to turn Fernandes into the centrepiece of a post-relegation auction. Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have already been credibly linked, and West Ham would welcome a bidding war to drive the price beyond United’s comfort zone.
United, under a new financial discipline, insist they will not be dragged into overpaying. Their stance this summer is clear: value or walk away.
Ederson deal sets the benchmark
That approach is already shaping their business. Talks for Atalanta midfielder Ederson are moving towards what looks like an early breakthrough, with sources indicating a fee below £35 million is realistic. Inside Old Trafford, that number is seen as a template for the kind of smart, efficient deals they want to repeat across the window.
If Ederson lands early, it gives United both security and leverage. They can push for Fernandes knowing they already have one key piece in place, and they can step back if West Ham’s price spirals beyond their valuation.
It also casts a shadow over other targets. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba remains a player United greatly admire, but the £100 million figure attached to him is at odds with the club’s new transfer posture. Unless Brighton soften their stance, United are unlikely to test that valuation in any serious way.
Shortlist grows, but price is king
Behind Fernandes and Ederson sits a cluster of names that shows the breadth of United’s planning. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has admirers at Old Trafford. So does Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, whose situation remains complex but whose talent is not in doubt. Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni also features on internal lists, an ambitious target whose availability and cost would dictate any move.
Every one of those options, though, comes with the same caveat: price and availability. United’s decision-makers are willing to be opportunistic if a situation breaks in their favour, but not reckless.
Rashford future clouds wide plans
While the midfield strategy sharpens, the picture on the left flank remains blurred.
United are considering delaying the signing of a left-sided attacker until Marcus Rashford’s future becomes clearer. His situation is delicately poised, tied in part to developments in Catalonia.
Anthony Gordon’s pending move to Barcelona has thrown Rashford’s prospects into doubt, yet not completely closed the door. There is still hope on the player’s side that a permanent switch to Barça can be revived. The Spanish club retain an interest, but any serious move will hinge on their finances and how Gordon’s deal is structured.
United, aware of that uncertainty, are reluctant to commit big money on a left-sided forward while one of their most high-profile assets could yet depart. A major sale would reshape both their budget and their needs in one stroke.
So the summer takes shape at Old Trafford: a midfield rebuild led by value-driven deals, a pursuit of Fernandes that may hinge on West Ham’s appetite for an auction, and a marquee forward whose future could yet swing the direction of the entire window.
